In an introduction to D. C. Lau's translation of Lun yu (The Analects), Confucius is referred to as "one of the most reasonable and humane thinkers of all time." The Gardener agrees. How far does modern and contemporary Chinese culture measure up to his sayings is, naturally, another story. We have to take into account the Western model adopted by the Chinese today.
